The eDNA results are in

In our last newsletter we wrote about eDNA testing in the Gill Ave Stream (Kelvin Strand). We had been advised by Auckland Council that they had assessed that the stream was unable to support fresh water fish because the saline content was too high during full tide. Therefore it was of no concern if the flow of this stream was significantly reduced for the Te Atatu Peninsula stormwater upgrades. This contradicted our and other local residents’ observations of native fish in the stream so we arranged for eDNA testing to be done to provide a picture of what species are present. When the results came back they showed DNA for many of native species, including tuna (short fin and longfin eel),  redfin bully, banded kokōpu, common bully, īnanga  We are pleased to see that the stream is supporting life but now we are even more determined that flow should not be diverted from this stream. 

Auckland Council have acknowledged our testing but dispute the accuracy claiming that it is possible that the DNA of these species has washed in from another stream with the tide. They say that they would trust the results if there were six tests done at this stream. Unfortunately this is not something that we can afford and we want Auckland Council to do due diligence before making changes to the flow; not just relying on hypothetical reports but actually doing their own field observations and testing. 

Currently the Peninsula Stormwater project is on hold due to budget constraints but Auckland Council promises that their ecologists will consider the information we have provided when the project resumes. We really hope this is the case and these considerations become part of the design. The Peninsula Stormwater upgrade is needed but let’s take the opportunity to get it right.
