RIVERCARE GROUP

Improving the Mauri of Te Wai o Pareira

Ko tātou te awa - We are the awa

Kia Ora, Nau Mai Haere Mai! We are the Te Wai o Pareira Rivercare Group

We are on a mission to restore the wellbeing of Te Wai o Pareira.

The health of the awa is intrinsically linked to the health of our community and the abundance of animal and plant life that surrounds it. We have made it our mission to restore the mauri, the lifeforce of Te Wai o Pareira.

TE RARURAU | THE PROBLEM

The current state of the awa

140 km² of sewerage catchment

All runoff from the catchment drains into Te Wai o Pareira.

170 years of contamination

Land clearance and industrial pollution have reshaped the awa since colonisation.

Habitat and pest pressure

Ongoing loss of native species and pest invasion threaten biodiversity.

Multiple sewage overflow points

Untreated wastewater enters the awa during rainfall events.

NGĀ MAHIGA | ACTIONS

What we do

Organise Planting days for the community

As part of our long-term restoration project at Tawa Esplanade Reserve, we're taking on more of the maintenance work, and we'd love your help. These maintenance events are short and sweet, a couple of hours on a Sunday in good company to get the reserve to keep the weeds suppressed.

Monitor the quality of the awa

We collect regular water samples and analyse them alongside Auckland Council data to track pollution, bacteria, and sediment levels — building a clear picture of the awa’s health over time

Protect the wildlife through our trapping project

We maintain traps around the perimeter of Te Atatū Peninsula to control rats, mice and possums that threaten vulnerable native species that breed here. Each trap set is another step toward a thriving, balanced ecosystem.

Educating the local schools and community

We work with local primary schools to help tamariki understand the awa’s story, the science of water health, and what kaitiakitanga looks like in action, growing the next generation of river guardians.
